From the ashes of Pilgrim Baptist Church to the personal healing of Dr. Kathryn Kemp, Make a Joyful Noise reveals how God used suffering to birth a movement that changed music forever.
Be among the first to experience the Red Carpet World Premiere of the definitive documentary on the birth of Chicago Gospel, and the legacy of Thomas A. Dorsey, the Father of Gospel music.
This is more than a film screening.
It is a night of history, testimony, and celebration.
Make a Joyful Noise is not just a film about history; it is a testimony of endurance.
It explores the mysterious parallel between two lives separated by decades but united by a “Joyful Noise.”
The Father of the Sound:
Thomas A. Dorsey was a blues man known as “Georgia Tom.” But it wasn’t until he coupled the chords of the Blues with the Good News of Jesus Christ that history changed. Out of the tragic loss of his wife and son came the anthem “Precious Lord,” a song that has comforted millions. He faced opposition for bringing a “new style” into the church, yet he persisted, knowing this music had the power to transform lives.
The Keeper of the Flame:
Dr. Kathryn Kemp spent her life around music, but it was a cancer diagnosis that brought her to her knees. Alone in a dark church, she made a vow: “If you allow me to live, I’ll serve you for the rest of my life.” She didn’t just survive; she was healed. And her assignment became clear: To ensure the world never forgets the sound that saved us.
“History is not lost because it didn’t happen. It is lost because we stopped telling it.”
Minister. Educator. Historian. Author.
Dr. Kathryn Kemp has devoted her life to preserving the history of Gospel music and proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ.
After decades of music ministry, teaching, and scholarship, a life altering cancer diagnosis became her breakthrough moment. She surrendered to ministry and began writing the history that many had overlooked.
Today, she is leading the effort to preserve Gospel’s birthplace through the vision of the Gospel Music Museum at Pilgrim Baptist Church.
Her life is not just documented in this film. It is living proof that God uses every season for His purpose.
Meet her story on premiere night.
We are not just gathering to watch a movie. We are gathering to build a fortress for our history.
Proceeds from this premiere go directly to the reconstruction of the Pilgrim Church Building in Chicago. This edifice had been constructed in 1891, and designed by famed architect Louis Sullivan and engineer Dankmar Adler. The initial drawings were prepared by draftsman Frank Lloyd Wright. The church was destroyed by fire in 2006 and has not been totally restored to this date. The church is eventually designated to be the home of the future Gospel Music Museum in Chicago – highlighting the Father of Gospel Music – Dr. Thomas A. Dorsey and the numerous musical legends who not only made Chicago home – but also influenced Gospel music for the country and the world. Pilgrim Baptist Church Chicago is officially known as “The Home of Gospel Music”. This building, even in its ruined status, brings thousands of visitors each year from around the world to witness and tour the site where gospel music became famous. The significance of this National Landmark and “Architectural Jewel” must be preserved for future generations.
This institution will house the artifacts and untold stories of the legends who paved the way.
When you buy a ticket, you aren’t just seeing a film. You are laying the foundation for a home where our history can live forever.
